A Busy Day for WGFC on Tuesday

October 6, 2026

Ever wonder what a "typical" day looks like for a busy local fire department? On Tuesday, it was a busy day for the crews of WGFC:

The day started out for our crews with a residential carbon monoxide alarm in London Grove Township at 7:35am. Engine 22-1 arrived to find the alarm activation was related to light smoke from cooking. No hazardous conditions were found within the home.

At 8:16am, Ladder 22 was dispatched to New Castle County, Delaware for a mutual aid response for the report of a commercial building fire in Hockessin. This was later found to be from a burn pile to the rear of the business and the response was held to NCC Station 19.

While attending the Avon Grove School District Life Skills/Autistic Support Group Public Safety Day, crews were alerted to a chemical spill at Avon Grove High School in a science lab. Chester County Hazmat Engine 15-1 was also attending this event and responded with WGFC. See our other news article on this incident (link below).

Later in the afternoon at 2:10pm, Engines 22-1 and 22-2 responded to a residential fire alarm on Saginaw Road which was determined to be activated by smoke from cooking.

Then, at 3:57pm a motor vehicle crash at Rt 41 and Rt 841 was dispatched, followed moments later by reports of a residential gas odor inside, both in London Grove Township. As call volumes increase, simultaneous emergency calls are becoming more common for WGFC first responders. Engine 221 responded and added Squad 23 of Avondale Fire Company to the motor vehicle crash through our close working partnership. As reports of the gas odor inside were received, Squad 23 was directed to handle the motor vehicle crash and Engine 22-1 redirected to the gas odor incident along with Ladder 22 and Engine 22-3. No hazardous conditions were found during this investigation.

During the day, WGFC members also held a Fire Prevention presentation at Penn London Elementary School.

And, our EMS first responders were dispatched a number of medical 911 calls including:
- 4:15am for a fall in Penn Township
- 10:17am respiratory in Penn Township
- 11:16am allergic reaction New Garden Township
- 11:48am for a fall in Penn Township
- 1:02pm for a seizures in London Grove Township
- 1:21pm for heart issues in London Grove Township
- 8:06pm for a CVA in Londonderry Township

Tuesday was a very busy day, and typical of the range of emergencies responded to by the West Grove Fire Company and our mutual aid partners.
