| On Tuesday, first responders were called to the Avon Grove High School in Penn Township for a reported chemical spill in one of the science classrooms. Working closely with the Chester County HazMat Team, Penn Township and school officials, the WGFC team worked to assure the safety of the school environment for students, staff and first responders.
Here is the message from the school district about what happened:
"Dear Avon Grove High School Families, We are reaching out with an update regarding the chemical spill in one of the science classrooms. First and most importantly, all students who were in the affected classroom were thoroughly screened on-site and cleared by emergency responders using specialized chemical detection meters. We were advised that short-term exposure to mercury typically does not cause health effects. Following consultation with the Fire Chief, district officials made the decision to dismiss students at 11:30 AM. Local fire department personnel and emergency responders arrived on scene to evaluate the situation, conduct an investigation, and oversee proper containment procedures. After the investigation was concluded, we received approval from emergency responders and environmental specialists to host after school activities. Chemical mitigation is currently onsite, and the affected areas are blocked off to students and staff. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. We appreciate your patience, understanding, and quick cooperation during this emergency response. Avon Grove School District"
A close working relationship between the fire company, township officials, and the school staff during training and previous incidents helped assure a quick outcome to Tuesday's event. First responders were at the school for approximately 2 hours Tuesday. |
