| In 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) named the second week of October Fire Prevention Week in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 and, since then, fire safety education has been a focus of the month of October. Each year, the West Grove Fire Company sends its first responders out to area schools and daycares in a focused effort to reach young children with fire safety messages that help form safety habits early.
Covering topics like stop-drop-and-roll, calling 911, smoke detectors, keeping bedroom doors closed at night, having a family evacuation meeting point in an emergency, and what fire fighters do, WGFC's first responders visit with children nearly every day of this month, kicking off activities this week -- National Fire Safety Week, October 5-9.
The WGFC fire prevention and safety programs for children have long been lauded locally, county wide and across the Commonwealth. We urge parents, guardians and others to take a moment this month to talk about home fire safety with young children, because, although fire safety is a focus nationally in October, the work of preventing fires at home is an all-year-long responsibility.
This year, the NFPA has a focused program on safety in charging batteries, given the number of fires, injuries and deaths that have come from battery fires, particularly with the growing use of lithium batteries in e-bikes, scooters and power tools. See the link below for more information.
We thank the area schools, churches and day cares that invite in our teams to delivery these important programs this year and every year. |
