The West Grove Fire Company was dispatched to a reported barn fire in Penn Township Sunday afternoon. The call at 4:49pm was reported by passers by with reports of a possible 2-story barn approximately 30 feet x 50 feet burning. The dispatch was for WGFC and it's mutual aid partners from area fire companies.
A WGFC ambulance arrived and reported a barn fully involved in fire, with exposure to a vehicle, and horses running loose on the property. A "working fire" dispatch was requested by Deputy 22 which brought additional units to the scene. Engine 22-1 arrived and laid a 5-inch supply line up the driveway and commenced a fire attack, with Tanker 22 arriving to provide the first 3200 gallons of water. Command also requested two additional brush units come to the scene, as high winds had driven the fire into adjacent fields and it was rapidly spreading east toward Route 796. Arriving units deployed handlines to fight the brush fire, as crews began overhaul on the structure to complete extinguishment.
Multiple tankers were used to supply the fire scene, with tankers traveling to WGFC Station 122 in New London where they were refilled by Engine 22-3. During the incident, a fire police task force was utilized to handle road closures as Route 796 was closed from the intersection with Route 896 and north to Kelton-Pennock Bridge Roads.
The fire was declared under control 31 minutes after the original dispatch with no injuries. WGFC units cleared the scene at approximately 630pm with units traveling to Station 22 in West Grove to clean hose and help get Engine 22-1 back into service.
