| As part of its commitment to continuous learning and training, first responders from the West Grove Fire Company along with members of the Avondale Fire Company participated in several hours of presentation on the dangers of trench collapse and rescue.
The presentation was provided by members of the New Castle County Task Force 1 trench rescue team. The team, based throughout New Castle County, operates specialized trench rescue equipment based at the Claymont Fire Company. They are available to respond to requests for assistance at the scenes of trench and building collapse and bring specialized equipment, supplies and expertise to augment local first responders.
During the presentation, responders learned about why trench excavations fail, about varying soil types and behaviors, and got an overview on relevant regulations that are supposed to guide how excavations are to be handled safely. Unfortunately, first responders are sent to rescue workers caught up in trench collapses, situations that require specific expertise and equipment. Such rescues involve the use shoring, struts, monitoring equipment and a careful approach to assure first responder safety at all times.
We are grateful to the Task Force for the presentation, which follows use of the expertise during a recent building collapse situation in a nearby community. For more information on trench safety, see the link below. |
