| Winter holidays are a time for families and friends to get together. But there is an increased risk for fire. Be safe this holiday season and follow advice from the National Fire Protection Association.
First, and foremost, Christmas trees can be a significant fire hazard. Experts emphasize the need to keep trees fresh with regular watering -- and, most importantly, to remove Christmas trees from your home or business when they become dried out. Once removed from the home or business, do not store them in the garage or lean them against the building. Keep them away from the house, and check to see if your area has a tree recycling program.
Also, never use candles to decorate a Christmas tree, and turn out all lights at night or before leaving the house. Don't position a Christmas tree where it can block an exit in a fire. The NFPA publishes two guides for the holidays.
