WGFC Wraps Up Fire Prevention Season
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

October 27, 2022

The WGFC is nearing the end of its pubic safety and fire prevention activities in October, completing its annual tour of schools and day care facilities -- all part of the fire company's effort to promote fire safety for young children.

While national efforts always focus on fire prevention week in October -- this year October 9-15 -- the WGFC dedicates the entire month to reaching as many children as possible. Coordinated by Lisa Glass -- known by the kids as "Firefighter Lisa," school visits focus on core fire safety topics like stop drop and roll, calling 911, smoke detectors, having a family meeting place, and showing off fire equipment so kids are not scared or intimidated by firefighters.

This month, the WGFC has visited: The Growing Place, Nazarene Academy, New London Preschool, Willowdale Academy, West Grove Day Care, Assumption BVM, Ducklings, YMCA Jennserville, Penn London Elementary, Cornerstone Preschool, Avon Grove Charter Elementary -- and all of that will doing similar programs at public events like the Lowes First Responder Day, the Homecoming Parade, Penn Township's Fall Fest, and the coming Trunk & Treat at the Avon Grove Intermediate School.

This year's fire prevention week marked the 100th year of fall focus on fire safety nationally. The WGFC thanks the various parents, teachers, and school administrators who made the in-school programs possible. Thanks to Lisa and the volunteers and staff of the fire company who dedicated hundreds of hours to school programs over the last month.

Parents can also leverage a video of our fire prevention programs that was produced during the Covid school shutdowns. This video can be watched together with children so they can learn Firefighter Lisa's lessons at any time: https://www.wgfc.org/content/front/FirePrevention2020.cfm .
