WGFC Handles Smoke in the Residence Call
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

January 21, 2022

With firefighters just returning home from fighting a barn fire for three hours (https://www.wgfc.org/news/1132/Crews-Battle-Barn-Fire-In-Upper-Oxford), West Grove Fire Company and mutual aid companies were dispatched for a house fire at 1:46am Monday morning. The call was on Laurel Lane in the South Hills development in West Grove Borough, with reports of a home filling with smoke. Units from West Grove, Avondale, Oxford, Cochranville, Kennett and Longwood Fire Companies were dispatched (with Longwood and Kennett units added due to WGFC Ladder 22 being out of service).

WGFC Engine 22-1 responded in West Grove, and was requested to lay a supply line in from Guernsey Road by Deputy 22, who reported a house filled with smoke. The Engine laid supply line from the hydrant up South Hills Drive and then to the fire scene, with crews deploying a 1-3/4" attack line. Also responding were WGFC's Engines 22-2 and 22-3, along with Tanker 22 and the Ambulances.

Union Fire Company of Oxford units left the scene of the previous barn fire to respond to this call, with Ladder 21 arriving to set up their aerial ladder to the roof, and add ground ladders to the rest of the dwelling. Oxford's Engine 21-2 took the hydrant location to supply the scene. Various Engine, Ladder, and Rescue crews arrived, with crews establishing a well-staffed manpower pool at the front of the residence.

After investigation, the source of the smoke was a malfunctioning furnace, and the scene was declared under control. Crews picked up the attack line and then worked to repack approximately 700 feet of supply line laid into the scene. Crews were on scene for just under an hour. WGFC Fire Police had the development and Guernsey Road closed during the incident. No injuries were reported.

Units: Engines 22-1, -2 and -3; Tanker 22; Ambulance 22-1, Fire Police

Mutual Aid: Ladder 21, Engine 21-2, Ladder 25, Tower 24, Engine 23-2, Rescue 23, Rescue 27.
