Hazardous Gas Meter Training for the WGFC

July 10, 2025

Recently, volunteer and career firefighters of the West Grove Fire Company took part in on-station training classes designed to help first responders be better familiar using specialized four-gas meters so they are prepared for situations involving hazardous materials.

WGFC apparatus are outfitted with portable four-gas meters which measure oxygen (O2), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and combustible gases (LEL), and are crucial for ensuring firefighter safety by detecting potentially hazardous atmospheric conditions during emergency responses. The meters are used regularly by WGFC personnel, most commonly at calls for gas leaks or gas odors, and can also be used at fire scenes to determine when conditions require use of self-contained breathing equipment. These meters are also essential for hazard calls, like confined space rescue.

On June 30, instructors conducted two, three-hour sessions -- one during the day time, and one in the evening -- taking first responders through the chemistry of hazardous materials, and how that chemistry impacts conditions at emergency scenes. The instructors from The Meter Guys - trainers who bring expertise and hands-on instruction -- also helped firefighters understand how the meters work, and best practices for meter operations at emergency scenes.

Continuous training is a hallmark of the West Grove Fire Company, with responders always learning and refreshing skills to be sure they are ready for nearly any situation they encounter.
