A hard, head-on crash on Route 896 at Appleton Road left one person injured and the roadway closed for two hours.
The West Grove Fire Company was dispatched at 10:12am for an accident reported serious. Medic 94 paramedics were sent along with the WGFC, which responded with Engine 22-1, Engine 22-3, Squad 22, two ambulances and fire police.
Engine 22-3 arrived and reported a two vehicle crash with the road blocked, and began patient assessment. Engine 22-1 and Squad 22 arrived and crews began securing the scene, including chocking the one vehicle that contained an injured driver. Chocking the car from underneath assures it is a stable vehicle to work in.
While EMTs continued assessment, crews pulled rescue tools to be ready if needed, and deployed a hand line for safety. EMTs determined it would be easier to move the patient by taking off the B-post and door on the driver's side. Using hydraulic rescue tools (commonly called the Jaws of Life), crews pulled off the rear driver's side door and the B-post. Crews then pulled the patient out onto a stretcher for treatment by WGFC EMTs and Medic 94 paramedic, and then transport to Christiana Hospital.
All other persons involved were evaluated and crews assisted the PA State Police with cleanup. Fire police had 896 and Appleton Roads closed at the scene. West Grove units were on scene for approximately 90 minutes. |
