August 1, 2022

A Sunday afternoon ride on a horse resulted in an injured party and a fire/rescue/EMS response involving multiple agencies.

The West Grove Fire Company was dispatched at 11:34am for a injured equestrian. The Chester County 911 Center reported that the incident was located on the North End Trail, off of Strickersville Road between Mt. Olivet Road and Springlawn Trail. The 911 Center reported that a horse had stumbled in a creek, the rider fell into the creek, and was stepped on by the horse.

WGFC responded with an Ambulance along with Rescue 22, Brush 22, Utility 22, Squad 22, and Engine 22-1. Crews went to the original dispatch location and began a process over the next 30+ minutes to try and locate the downed rider. Chief 22 staged units at the Fair Hill Trailhead near Augustine Lane. An ATV unit was requested, bringing ATV25 from the Longwood Fire Company.

Units went out into the fields to determine the injured riders location, with GPS coordinates used, along with having the 911 caller listen for sirens. Crews knew from the caller that they were near a field where a farmer was bailing hay. Ultimately, the location was determined to be nearly 2,600+ feet off of Strickersville Road, but more accessible from the Fair Hill park entrance off of Appleton Road in Cecil County, across the state line into Maryland. Dispatchers utilized GPS coordinates from the 911 caller's cell phone signal to get an area location for fire department personnel to search.

Once the injured rider was reached, a plan was put together to have WGFC personnel carry the injured party out in a stokes basket up the stream to a location where the patient could be transferred to ATV25 then driven out to the ambulance. An advanced life support unit from Medic 94 was also added to the call.

Overall, the incident lasted about three hours from the initial call until the units were cleared from the scene.

Units: Brush 22, Rescue 22, Utility 22, Ambulance 22-2, Squad 22, Engine 22-1, Fire Police

Mutual Aid: ATV 25 (Longwood), Medic 94-2
