Protect Emergency Workers' Safety: PA's New Move Over Law
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

April 30, 2021

Pennsylvania’s Move Over Law requires drivers approaching an emergency response area, who are unable to safely merge into a lane further away from the response area, to slow to at least 20 mph less than the posted speed limit. An emergency response area is where an emergency vehicle has its lights flashing, or where road crews or emergency responders have lighted flares, posted signs, or try to warn travelers.

Drivers in Pennsylvania are required to move over or slow down when they see an emergency vehicle or disabled vehicle or face fines. Pennsylvania's new "Move Over Law" went into effect Tuesday. Drivers face fines of $500 for a first offense and up to $2,000 for a third offense.

Drawing attention to this law is important, as emergency fire and ambulance crews are often responding to auto accidents and other emergencies and have to operate on highways, directly in traffic lanes. Please help protect the lives of our Firefighters, EMTs, Fire Police and those of our peers in the Police and Advanced Life Support services who join us on the highways. Even highway workers, tow truck operators, and utility and municipal workers face the same dangers.

PA's new law puts emphasis on this highway safety issue -- please respect this law and the safety of emergency responders.
