Cold Weather Safety

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning through Sunday, warning of wind chills that could reach -15 degrees. With this kind of weather, there is danger from the cold, especially for vulnerable populations like the elderly and newborns.

Just like first responders in the fire company who prepare for the very cold temperatures and wind, so too should everyone. The National Weather Service has great information on cold weather safety which can be found at the link below.

The arctic air can be dangerous. Combined with brisk winds, dangerously cold wind chill values can result. People exposed to extreme cold are susceptible to frostbite and can succumb to hypothermia in a matter of minutes. Areas most prone to frostbite are uncovered skin and the extremities, such as hands and feet. Hypothermia occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it.

The way to avoid frostbite and hypothermia is to plan for extreme cold before it arrives. Don't get caught unprepared. And if you suspect a cold weather health emergency, move the patient indoors if safely possible and call 911.
