Two Subjects Trapped in Penn Township

A small pickup left the roadway in Penn Township last evening, struck trees and turned onto its side, trapping two subjects.

The West Grove Fire Company was first dispatched for an auto accident on Kelton Road just before 10:30pm near Dutton Farms Lane. The call was then quickly upgraded to an accident with entrapment moments later when the Chester County 911 Center received an additional report that two subjects were trapped.

The WGFC responded with two ambulances, Engine 22-1, Squad 22 and Engine 22-3. On arrival, first responders found the small pickup on its side against several trees with significant front end damage and two patients inside. The pickup had struck and sheered off a tree, then turning on its side. Engine 22-1's crew secured the pickup to a nearby tree with rescue straps, and then further secured the vehicle from moving with rescue struts to assure a stable vehicle to work on. Joined by crews from Squad 22, firefighters then used rescue tools to remove the roof of the pick up by "flapping" it down to the ground to expose the patient compartment and remove both patients.

EMTs from the WGFC and paramedics from Medic 94 then transported both patients to the Christiana Hospital. WGFC fire police had local roads closed during the incident, with WGFC units clearing the scene in about 45 minutes.
