WGFC Assists Avondale on House Fire

March 16, 2023

West Grove firefighters were called to assist Station 23 Avondale for a working house fire in New Garden Township on Wednesday afternoon.

At 4:40pm, fire companies across southern Chester County and New Castle County were dispatched to a fire on Rocky Springs Road, in the area of Old Limestone Road. A garage, attached to single-family home, was reported on fire. The call was in Avondale Fire Company's local district, with units from West Grove, Hockessin, Kennett Square and Longwood fire companies dispatched.

Responding units could make out a large smoke header enroute to the call, with Avondale units arriving to report a ranch-style house with an attached garage fully involved. The initial Avondale engine laid a supply line up Rocky Spring Road and began a fire attack, with heavy fire having extended from the garage into the residence.

Tankers from Avondale, West Grove, Kennett and Longwood shuttled water to the scene. Fire fighters from various companies extended hose lines to fight the fire, with crews from Engines 22-1 and 22-2 joining the effort to fight extension and conduct overhaul.

Crews were on scene for about two hours before clearing this call. WGFC fire police assisted with traffic control.

WGFC firefighters responded to this emergency after completing work on a large brush fire in the Oxford area earlier in the afternoon.
