WGFC Assists on Lancaster County Barn Fire

January 28, 2023

Units from across Lancaster and Chester County were dispatched to a barn fire on Friday.

Just past 1230pm, the Quarryville Fire Company was dispatched for a barn fire at 39 White Rock Road, in Colrain Township. With calls to the Lancaster 911 Center increasing, a "working fire" was dispatched, adding additional units to the call, including a number of water tankers. This added tankers from Chester County, including from the Union Fire Company of Oxford, Cochranville, and the West Grove Fire Company. WGFC responded with Tanker 22.

The initial arriving engine from Quarryville laid 400 feet of supply line from the road to the barn, and immediately set up to protect an adjacent home, and nearby milking room and diesel room. Their initial efforts saved those structures even with a very large barn fully involved. A water supply operation was set up out on the road, with arriving tankers feeding into Tanker 57 which served as a "nurse tanker" supplying the fire scene.

Tankers shuttled water to the scene from the Octoraro Lake. The water supply operation provided water for firefighting, involving an elevated master stream from Ladder 57, truck-mounted deluge guns, and multiple handlines. In all, 1100 feet of hose was deployed in a four-hour operation.
