Units of the West Grove Fire Company were alerted for a possible chimney fire on School Road in New London Township, Saturday afternoon. As Ladder 22 and Engines 22-2 and 22-3 were responding, additional reports of smoke from the eaves of the house resulted in the alarm being upgraded to a possible dwelling fire, bringing additional units from the Oxford, Avondale and Cochranville fire companies.

Engine 22-2 arrived first, laying a large diameter supply line up the long driveway and reporting nothing showing on arrival. On further examination, the crew reported smoke from the C/D corner (rear, north side corner), and requested Ladder 22 to come up the driveway and prepare to raise the aerial ladder to the roof. Engine 22-2's crew stretched a hose line and began throwing ladders to the structure, while also beginning efforts to empty the fireplace of burning material.

Engine 22-3 arrived and picked up the supply line to prepare to flow water, if needed. Engine 22-1 also arrived, and crews from both engines moved to assist the Engine and Ladder crews at the house. Crews from the roof and ground ladders worked to find the source of smoke and determine if any heat or fire had escaped from the fireplace or chimney. The Ladder crew removed the chimney cap and dropped chains down the chimney pipe to assure there were no blockages of burning material.

As units from Oxford, Avondale, and Cochranville arrived, crews were held out on the street and the situation was declared under control. Command held the scene to West Grove units, and crews completed their investigation. Five sections of large diameter hose were repacked on Engine 22-2 (such supply lines are laid in case there is a need to supply water from the road down the driveway to units at the fire scene). Crews were on scene just over 90 minutes.
