Each year, the Philadelphia Flyers recognize First Responders (fire, police, EMS) at a home game in early January. On Thursday, January 4, the West Grove Fire Company hosted a bus trip to the Philadelphia Flyers First Responders night. This is the third year WGFC members have had the opportunity to enjoy a night out as a group as part of the Flyers first responder celebration night.
Over the past few years, the leadership of the WGFC have prioritized programs designed to both recruit and retain members. Finding social activities designed to entertain firefighters and ambulance personnel along with their families is a priority, especially because it helps build the team, and helps to thank volunteers and members and their families for their service. The program by the Philadelphia Flyers offers a real opportunity to achieve these goals, on a larger stage, away from the firehouse -- and put the WGFC in the company of other first responder organizations who are also looking to recognize their members' service.
On January 4, 57 people including WGFC members and their family and friends were able to attend the game in Philadelphia. The Flyers organization starts out the night by recognizing First Responders and thanking them for their service. The Flyers hosted the New York Islanders at the Wells Fargo Center with a 7pm puck drop. Lauren Hart, the number one ranked anthemist in the NHL, sung "The Star-Spangled Banner" and the puck was dropped to start the game.
This was the sixth meeting of the year; with the season series at 1-4 and the Flyers falling to the Islanders in their previous two meetings. Philadelphia Flyers beat the New York Islanders by a score of 6-4. Yes, the Flyers won -- which made the night even better -- but overall, the real winners that evening were thousands of first responders -- fire, EMS, and police personnel who put their lives on the line each day to serve their communities. It was a great evening to have the members and families of the WGFC be a part of the celebration -- to celebrate their accomplishments, team spirit, thank friends and family, and see a really good hockey game.
