By Firefighter Austin Van der Mooren
November 8, 2014

West Grove Fire Company was dispatched at 11:04 saturday morning to assist Station 21(Union Fire Company) on a building fire, in the 300 block of Blake Road, Elk Township. The building was reported to be an unattached 2 story garage, that was being used as a cabinet shop, with heavy smoke inside.

West Grove units that responded were Tanker 22, Engine 22, Engine 32 and an ambulance. Tanker 22 assisted at the fill site, utilizing its 3,000 gallon tank.

An extensive water operation was needed to supply the over 1,000 feet of 5 inch hose which stretched from the fill site to the scene. A portable water tank was set up and was supplied by several water tankers.

The crews from Engine 22 and Engine 32 went up to the scene to assist with manpower. The crews were sent to the D side of the building to remove the vinyl siding to expose and extinguish any potential hot spots. A collapse of the second floor in one portion of the building challenged firefighters who had to move to an exterior defensive attack, but still saved a good portion of the building.

Ambulance 22 transported one patient with Medic 94 to Christiana Hospital.

Once the fire was under control at 1227 hours, the engine crews were ordered to wet down any remaining hot spots before assisting in the breaking down of various attack lines. Once 21's apparatus were packed up, West Grove units went available at 1322 hours.
