The WGFC Station 12 was dispatched for an accident with unknown injuries on Route 896 between Pennbrook Dr and Hess Mill Rd at 11:28 on Saturday June 30. A semi truck driving south on Rt 896 rounded a corner south of Hess Mill Rd and and was unable to stop for a disabled vehicle facing north in the southbound travel lane.
Shortly after the initial dispatch (23:30) additional information was relayed that the accident involved a semi-truck and a disabled vehicle and it was unknown if the vehicle was occupied. As information continued to update while WGFC units were en-route, it was confirmed there was an occupant in the car and was soon upgraded to entrapment at 23:31 adding R-22 and E-32 to the assignment.
Rescue 12 made the response with four volunteers. At 23:35, Assistant 22 along with Ambulance 22-3 arrived on scene and confirmed one person heavily entrapped. Shortly thereafter Rescue 12 arrived, stabilized the vehicle, and started the process of extrication. Engine 32 and Brush 12 arrived shortly thereafter and assisted with the extrication. Ambulance 22-1 and both SCCEMS Medic 94 units arrived to assist with patient care.
Due to the patient positioning two operations were started. Access was started from the passenger side door as well as a full roof removal. While those operations were underway the crew operating at the driver's side was able to free the patient at 23:45 and the patient was packaged and transported to Christina Hospital with multiple injuries.
R-22 was returned at 21:48 and R-12 cleared at 12:33. Fire Police, E-32, B-12, Asst 22, Dep 22 and Chief 22 remained on scene for cleanup and to provide lighting to the towing company. All units cleared at 1:20.
The driver was entrapped, but freed by crews from WGFC Rescue 12.
A fully loaded tractor trailer struck a vehicle sitting in the southbound travel lane of Route 896 just south of Hess Mill Road, leaving one patient entrapped and seriously injured.
Fortunately, there was no passenger in the car, as there was significant intrusion.
